KE Maintains No Significant Change in Loadshed Regime

Karachi, October 01, 2023 (PPI-OT): KE maintains that there has been no significant change in the loadshedding regime for its service territory under the amended schedule published on the company’s website, which is effective immediately. This schedule follows KE’s review of its network of 2,000 feeders for electricity theft and non-payment of bills. The last review was conducted in July 2023. Customers can view updates on the KE live App as well.

Commenting on the review, Spokesperson KE stated, “We undertake an assessment of our network on a periodic basis to accurately identify the loss profile of areas. Areas with reduced losses benefit from reductions or exemptions in loadshed, and such areas comprise 71% of our network. The remainder is made up of areas where electricity theft and non-payment of bills impair our ability to provide uninterrupted power. To counter this, KE is implementing stricter governance measures in line with the regulations outlined by NEPRA for the entire power sector. Furthermore, in line with the nationwide action against electricity theft, KE is also closely liaising with Government of Sindh and law enforcement agencies to ensure that electricity theft is penalized in accordance with the law.”

Examples of areas that have improved include Diamond City Project and Maymar Sector-S associated with “Diamond City” feeder with reported AT and C losses of 32.0% in comparison to July this year, resulting in a 4-hour reduction in duration of loadshed. Similarly, “Falak Naz Plaza” feeder which serves Falak Naz Center, Faisal Center, O.T Hospital and adjoining areas near the airport has also reported AT and C losses of 21.6%, resulting in a 6-hour reduction of loadshed.

Conversely, loadshed duration has increased in areas where electricity theft has risen or the propensity to pay has been negatively impacted owing to macroeconomic conditions and government-mandated increases in the price of electricity. Such areas include Liaquat Chowk and Gulshan-e-Zia in Orangi served by “Bismillah Chowk” feeder, which has reported losses of 26.3% in comparison to July this year. Similarly, “P and T” colony feeder supplying power to P and T Colony and Chandio Village in Gizri recorded losses of 41.5%.

Spokesperson clarified that these areas will be monitored closely until the next review, while emphasizing that “free electricity” cannot be provided if bill payment is low or continues to decline. The company regularly establishes facilitation camps with area representatives to inculcate a culture of regular bill payment. KE further pledges its fullest support to those willing to work with the company to eradicate power theft, a critical step towards improvement of power supply.
