Remembering legacy of Razi Akhtar Shauq: A maestro in Urdu poetry, drama


Today marks the death anniversary of the distinguished Urdu poet and playwright, Razi Akhtar Shauq.

Born as Khawaja Razi-ul-Hassan Ansari with the pen name ‘Shauq’ in Saharanpur in 1933, Razi Akhtar Shauq got his B.A degree from Jamia Usmania.

He later moved to Pakistan after the partition of India, and permanently settled in Karachi.

Razi Akhtar Shauq earned his M.A. degree from the University of Karachi and initiated his professional career at Radio Pakistan. Notably, he authored numerous memorable dramas under the title ‘Studio Number Nine’ at Radio Pakistan Karachi.

Razi Akhtar Shauq’s poetic collections, including ‘Mere Mausam Mere Khwab’ and ‘Just,’ have left an indelible mark on Urdu literature.

In the final days of his life, Razi Akhtar Shauq battled heart disease and ultimately passed away on January 22, 1999, in Karachi. He rests in peace at the Azizabad Cemetery.
