Lahore: Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Ali Ejaz announced that a formal “Emission Testing System” (ETS) has been launched in Punjab, marking a first in Pakistan’s history for vehicle emission testing.
According to Radio Pakistan, Ali Ejaz shared in an exclusive interview that the ETS initiative is aimed at tackling environmental pollution, with a particular focus on reducing smog. Modern emission testing machines are currently operational in Lahore to assess vehicle smoke emissions. Vehicles that meet the standards are being issued Green Stickers as proof of compliance.
Ali Ejaz further explained that under the Punjab Environmental Quality Standards, vehicles are permitted up to 6 percent carbon monoxide emissions, and specific noise level limits have been established. The formal launch was conducted by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who placed the first Green Sticker on her vehicle.
Currently, Environmental Protection Agency teams are performing checks at eight locations in Lahore, with plans to expand the system throughout Punjab. This initiative will remain voluntary until September, after which, during the smog season, vehicles lacking an emission sticker will face fines.
In addition to vehicles, the Environmental Protection Agency is also monitoring petrol pumps, industries, wastewater, dust, and construction sites using drones, patrols, and electronic monitoring systems.
