Karachi: President Asif Ali Zardari has inaugurated the ‘Benazir Hunarmand Programme’, an initiative aimed at empowering the skilled workforce in Pakistan. Speaking at the launch event, the President emphasized the importance of education and skill development, advocating for every household to have access to learning and educational tools.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari highlighted that the new programme is rooted in the philosophy of Zulfikar Bhutto and carries forward the legacy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who championed inclusive prosperity and education for all. He expressed a commitment to realizing this vision for uplifting marginalized communities. The launch event was also attended by First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari.
The President underscored the critical role of skills development in national progress and in meeting the demands of international markets. He emphasized equipping the youth with modern technical skills required globally, with a particular focus on the
nursing profession, which he noted as being in high demand internationally. Additionally, he stressed the need for learning foreign languages alongside modern skills to facilitate employment opportunities abroad.
Reflecting on his previous tenure, President Zardari recalled the launch of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), a significant social protection initiative in Pakistan. He expressed gratitude to former Finance Minister Naveed Qamar for his role in the programme’s implementation and announced plans to further enhance BISP by introducing additional programmes.
The Benazir Hunarmand Programme is seen as a continuation of this legacy, aimed at community upliftment through empowerment and opportunity. President Zardari reiterated his dedication to providing the youth with the necessary skills, education, and opportunities to contribute to a prosperous Pakistan. He noted the significance of June 21, marking both the birthday of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed and a day of remembrance for her impactful gui
dance.
Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme, Senator Rubina Khalid, highlighted BISP’s evolution over 17 years into the largest social protection programme in Pakistan. She mentioned its pivotal role in providing financial assistance to 10 million families, especially during crises like the 2022 floods and the COVID pandemic. Khalid stated that the Benazir Hunarmand Programme would leverage BISP’s database to cultivate an empowered and self-reliant citizenry capable of economic participation. She commended BISP as a globally recognized social protection model.
The event was attended by Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider, ministers, parliamentarians, diplomats, and high-ranking officers. A cake was cut to celebrate the birthday of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed.
