Pakistan to Present Climate Initiatives at COP29, Aims for Increased Climate Finance

Islamabad: Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC and EC), Romina Khurshid Alam, emphasized the significance of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) for Pakistan to showcase its climate actions, challenges, and solutions. In a meeting with development partners, Alam discussed the urgency of addressing climate issues in Pakistan, a country highly vulnerable to climate impacts despite its minimal contribution to global emissions.

According to Press Information Department, Alam was speaking at a preparatory meeting for COP29, where she highlighted the need for international collaboration to achieve climate diplomacy goals. She stressed the importance of gender equality and smart agriculture through private sector engagement. The meeting also aimed to gather input from development partners to enhance Pakistan’s participation in COP29 and secure more climate finance for adaptation projects.

Alam pointed out the severe consequences of climate disasters in Pakistan, including the floods in 2022 that caused over 24 billion PKR in damages. She emphasized the country’s position as one of the most vulnerable globally, advocating for justice regarding loss and damage due to climate change.

The PM’s aide also underscored the significance of inclusive growth strategies that align with the Business 20 (B20) theme for 2024, “Inclusive Growth for a Sustainable Future.” These strategies focus on various pillars, including climate change and resource efficiency. Alam is actively seeking collaboration with B20 countries to develop regional solutions for these challenges.

Furthermore, Alam highlighted the efforts of provincial governments, particularly the proactive measures taken by the Chief Minister of Punjab. The province has finalized its “Climate Change Policy and Action Plan for 2024,” aiming to tackle issues such as smog and environmental degradation.

Aisha Humera Ch, Secretary at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, also contributed to the discussions. She provided insights to ensure Pakistan’s preparedness and success at the upcoming COP29 summit, emphasizing the need for a concrete plan to tackle the pressing climate challenges.

Development partners from various international institutions also shared their initiatives to make Pakistan’s participation in COP29 more effective. The meeting was attended by representatives from international institutions, diplomatic missions, and officials from the climate change ministry.
