Pakistan Navy Chief Stresses ‘Safety First’ on World Maritime Day

Islamabad: Pakistan Navy observed World Maritime Day with a strong emphasis on maritime safety, security, and environmental conservation. This year’s theme, ‘Navigating the Future: Safety First,’ highlights the importance of integrating safety with technological advancements and innovation in the maritime sector. The event also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, a pivotal treaty in regulating maritime safety.

According to Pakistan Navy, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, released a message emphasizing the critical role of maritime safety in sustainable development and the global shipping industry. He noted that with shipping handling about 90% of global trade by volume, enhancing the safety and efficiency of maritime operations is essential for sustainable economic growth. The 2024 theme aligns with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Admiral Ashraf highlighted the need for the maritime industry to adapt to digitalization and automation, which are revolutionizing the sector. He pointed out that introducing new technologies could improve safety, security, and efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and ensure long-term sustainability. These advancements could also enhance the industry’s competitiveness by allowing more efficient ship design, construction, and operation, as well as cost reductions and improved customer satisfaction.

The Chief of the Naval Staff also underscored the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to safety, which he described as a core element of their operations. He stated that the Navy continuously reviews its processes to address any safety gaps and has implemented stringent measures to adhere to the ‘safety first’ principle both onboard ships and ashore.

On World Maritime Day, Admiral Ashraf called for a unified approach among all stakeholders to embrace the shift towards sustainable and green maritime practices. He reaffirmed the Pakistan Navy’s dedication to ensuring maritime safety and fulfilling environmental responsibilities, urging collective action to uphold these principles vigorously.
