Final Defense of Three PhD Students Concludes at SMIU

Karachi: Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai, Vice Chancellor of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU), emphasized the importance of integrating critical analysis and practical suggestions in academic research, beyond mere references. He shared these insights during the final thesis defenses of three PhD students from the Education Department at SMIU. The event, held on Monday at the university’s Senate Hall, highlighted the significance of research authenticity and innovation within the field of education.

According to Sindh Madressatul Islam University, Dr. Sahrai critically evaluated the research of the PhD candidates, advising them to engage with the latest literature and policies from the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Sindh Higher Education Commission, and the Sindh government education departments. He stressed the need for research to address educational quality, methodology, challenges, and improvements across various levels, from primary to higher education.

Dr. Sahrai commented on the thesis titled ‘Inclusive Education Advocacy: Policy, Practices and Challenges in Public Secondary Schools of Karachi’ by PhD student Ashfaq Ahmed. He underscored the importance of considering the needs of special children in educational research, advocating for adequate facilities for them in both public and private schools.

Regarding the thesis ‘Aligning Undergraduate Curriculum with Market Needs: Analyzing Gaps and Proposing Strategies for Enhanced Employability in Educational Institutions of Sindh,’ the Vice Chancellor encouraged graduates to explore employment opportunities beyond educational institutions. Dr. Anjum Bano Kazmi mentioned a newly developed curriculum tailored to market demands and recommended the PhD student review it.

The third thesis by Mr. Toufique Shaikh, ‘Analyzing Sindh Higher Education Development Plans: Quality, Accessibility, and Implementation Challenges,’ prompted experts to advise him to include policies and departmental roles in enhancing university education quality, along with the contributions of federal and Sindh HEC in promoting higher education.

Among the theses presented, only Ms. Saida Batool’s thesis received approval, albeit with suggested changes. The other two students were advised to make essential revisions and reappear for their final defense after a month.

The session was attended by esteemed academics including Professor Dr. Anjum Bano Kazmi, Dr. Aftab Ahmed Shaikh, Dr. Jamshed Adil Halepoto, Dr. Stephen John, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Khan, Dr. Ambreen Fazal, Dr. Muhammad Malook Rind, and others.
