Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal Leads Meeting to Overhaul Urban Planning in Pakistan

Islamabad: In a significant move to address the challenges of urbanization, Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal chaired a meeting on the National Urban Planning Framework. The conference, aimed at transforming Pakistani cities into sustainable and efficient urban centers, highlighted key strategies including modern urban planning, effective governance, and the integration of climate resilience measures.

According to Press Information Department, the session was attended by key government officials including Parliamentary Secretary Wajiha Qamar, the Additional Secretary for Planning, members of the Planning Commission, and senior officials from various departments. Minister Ahsan Iqbal outlined the Framework’s primary goals to make cities livable hubs of growth that support sustainable development while addressing Pakistan’s rapid urbanization and population growth. He emphasized the need for improved land management and zoning laws to prevent the conversion of fertile agricultural lands into housing projects and underscored the importance of expert urban planning.

The meeting disclosed that 54% of Pakistan’s urban population is concentrated in just 21 major cities, with significant numbers in mega-cities like Karachi and Lahore. This concentration has led to the expansion of illegal settlements and informal housing, adversely impacting urban functionality. Minister Iqbal called for enhanced Federal and Provincial collaboration to tackle these issues, making cities safer and more resilient.

Furthermore, Minister Iqbal stressed the urgent need to address environmental pollution, housing shortages, and the inefficient use of land resources, which are currently degrading the quality of urban life. He also advocated for improvements in urban transportation systems and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to foster a more environmentally friendly and youth-centric urban environment.

Concluding the meeting, Minister Ahsan Iqbal directed all relevant agencies to prepare a comprehensive and sustainable urban planning framework. This initiative is expected to serve as a model for other provinces, helping to transform Pakistan’s major cities into engines of economic growth.
