Commission for Protection of Journalists & Media Professionals Becomes Functional

Islamabad: The Commission for Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals has become functional and has taken key decisions to address journalists and media professionals’ complaints. Its maiden meeting was held in Islamabad today with Kamaluddin Tipu in the chair.

According to Radio Pakistan, a formal mechanism has been devised for handling complaints, and a committee has been established to draft the commission’s rules and regulations. Among other decisions, the commission resolved to adopt digitalization by launching a dedicated web portal to streamline processes and provide training opportunities. It also decided to organize workshops and seminars aimed at building the capacity of journalists and media professionals.

It is noteworthy that the notification establishing the commission was issued through the personal efforts of Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar. The government has set up the commission in full compliance with international standards and best practices. The commission is committed to ensuring the independent and autonomous functioning of journalists and media professionals.

The inaugural meeting was also attended by the Principal Information Officer and the Director General of the Human Rights Commission. Representatives of various journalist organizations from across the country participated in the meeting, including Nawaz Raza, Khalil Ahmed, Tahir Hassan, Naveed Akbar, Hassan Abbas, Tamsela Qureshi, and Nadia Saboohi.
