Brazil’s president sacks country’s army chief for failing to control riots

Brazil’s president, Lula da Silva, has sacked the country’s army chief General Julio Cesar de Arruda for failing to control the riots in the capital earlier this month.

President Lula accused that the members of the armed forces colluded with protesters. He has also dismissed dozens of military officers in recent days.

Thousands of supporters of Mr Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in Brasília on 8 January after managing to march, largely unchallenged, through the city.
